3 New Prelates for the Philippines

In a move that surprised many, Pope Benedict XVI appointed three new prelates for Dioceses in the Philippines.

Bishop Sergio Utleg of the Diocese of Laoag (in Ilocos Norte) was appointed Archbishop of Tugegarao (in Cagayan Valley). Utleg, according to CBCP News, is currently the chairman of the Episcopal Commission Indigenous Peoples of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

Monsignor Jose Bantolo of the Diocese of San Jose de Antique was appointed Bishop of Masbate; and Monsignor David William Valencia Antonio of the Archdiocese of Nieva Segovia was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the same Archdiocese.
