Every hour of the day in India at least 15 people commit suicide, according to the latest official data released by the National Crime Records Bureau. Of the 371 suicides that take place each day, approximately 242 are males and 129 are females. Figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau last week show that 135,445 people killed themselves in 2012. Family problems accounted for 84 suicides a day on an average.
A closer study of the statistics reveals that poverty and illness have actually decreased fractionally as causes of suicide. Family problems emerge as the main motivator. Alarmed by the overall increase, an increasing number of social activists and health professionals are calling for the government to regard suicide as a serious public health issue rather than a mental health problem that is left for the individual to resolve.
