A recent survey indicated a sharp increase in the number of poor people across Indonesia despite the fact that living standards as a whole are improving. Forty-three million Indonesians live on less than 87 US cents a day. The Sant’Egidio community in Indonesia launched an adopt-a-child program that aims to encourage well-off donors across Indonesia to help the poor children of their own country. The project is an extension of an existing scheme which seeks foreign donors. The Community of Sant’Egidio is a public lay association that is officially recognized by the Vatican.
