CNN reports that Japan had an surprising upsurge in the number of suicides. There were 3,281 suicides, 20% more than May of 2010.
Tokyo had the highest number of suicides in May at 325. Fukushima had 19 more suicides this year, with a total of 68. Experts say that it may be because of the number of disasters that hit the country over the past few months.
According to the World Health Organization, Japan’s suicide rate remains one of the highest among developed nations.
