JAPAN: Increasing Number Of “Lonely Deaths” Among Elderly People

Japanese authorities have expressed concern about the growing number of poor elderly people who die lonely and unnoticed deaths.  Some of these cases, also referred to as “kodokushi” (lonely deaths) may have been due to people’s resistance to go on welfare and consult authorities.  Some may have been living in isolation in their communities.  It is a great irony that people are dying of poverty when one considers that Japan is the world’s third richest country.
