Pakistan: Concern mounts over rising child labor

More than five million children under the age of 10 are working in Pakistan, and the problem is worsening in both sheer numbers and prevalence, said an international NGO on World Day Against Child Labor last June 12.

“According to recent surveys, around 11 million to 12 million children are employed as child labors across the country; half of them are aged below 10,” said Rashid Aziz, national manager of the Legal Advisory Unit at the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC).  The organization is recommending the government increase the minimum working age to 16 years old.
