SINGAPORE: Immigration Is Proposed Solution to Aging Population

Based on a paper presented bySingapore’s National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) entitled “Citizen Population Scenarios,” the country needs to sustain an influx of about 20,000 to 25,000 new citizens in order to stabilize its population.  It also highlighted that in the next 18 years, almost a million Baby Boomers (adults born in the post-World War II period) will retire from the workforce, causing an “unprecedented age shift” inSingapore’s citizenry and exerting adverse consequences on its citizen workforce.
