SINGAPORE: Students Design Phone Applications for Visually-Handicapped

Students from Temasek Polytechnic (TP), in collaboration with the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH), created mobile phone applications to help the visually-handicapped.  With the new applications, texts can be captured and read back to the user, through the interface of iPhone’s voice software with an optical character recognition technology.  This will respond to the need of the visually-impaired for an item that they can carry around, unlike the bulky and expensive screen readers, to help them read packaging labels on any product.
