– Abortion was legalized by the Maternal and Child Health Law in 1973.

Abortion is considered a form of contraception.                                                                

43.7 percent of pregnancies end in abortion.

– 114,300 couples divorced in 2011.                                                                                   

The country features among the top ten nations with highest divorce rates.            

The divorce waiting system was first introduced in June 2008.  It forces couples to wait between one to three months before a court allows legal separation

– It has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, with 40 people taking their own lives each day.

– South Koreans are found to be the world’s top buyer of pornographic materials.  The irony is that it is illegal to pay for online pornography in Korea.

– The sex trade in Korea was estimated to amount to US$ 13 billion, roughly 1.6 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product.

– 20% of men in their 20s pay for sex at least four times a month, with 358,000 people visiting prostitutes daily.

-South Korea’s first gay-themed magazine, “Buddy”, launched in 1998.
